Red Dot Design Ranking 2016 for design concepts

The Red Dot Design Ranking 2016 honours enterprises and institutions which have continuously proven excellence in the course of the Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The ranking is based on a weighted formula considering the cumulative number and classes of awards received over the last five years. The Red Dot Design Ranking, which is released by the Red Dot Institute, consists of four honourary lists: for companies, design studios, universities in the Asia Pacific region and universities in the Americas and Europe.

Red Dot founder and CEO Professor Dr. Peter Zec explains: “This ranking tracks and measures the success of an enterprise in producing exciting new design concepts over a period of time. It is a good reflection of real sustainable design innovation capability of an organisation. It gives these companies and institutions the recognition that they deserve and encouragement toward their continued investment in design”.

Topping or maintaining their rankings in contrast to the previous year are KT Corporation (South Korea) in the category for companies, Emami Design (Germany) in the category for design studios and Zhejiang University (China) in the category for Universities in the Asia Pacific region. Meanwhile, Umeå Institute of Design (Sweden) rose to the top rank in the category for universities in the Americas and Europe. The newly ranked organisations include GD Midea Group (China), Deya Culture Communion Xiamen Co Ltd (China), SAP SE (Germany), X-Charger (China) and Lotte Advanced Materials Co Ltd (South Korea) in the ranking among companies. Cambridge Consultants (UK) joined the ranking among design studios, and the University for the Creative Arts (UK) is new in the ranking among the universities in the Americas and Europe.

About the Red Dot Award: Design Concept

In 2005, the Red Dot Design Award recognised the need to identify and honour new design concepts and innovations, the precursor of tomorrow’s great products. Believing a design concept must be evaluated based on its design merit without prejudice, the award created an unprecedented platform that accepts entries from companies to design students. Today, the Red Dot Award: Design Concept has grown to be the largest and most recognised professional design competition for design concepts and prototypes worldwide.
