Red Dot award ceremony 2015: Major honour for the best designers and products in the anniversary year of the design award

On 29 June, the global design scene will converge in Essen to celebrate the best products of the year. The glamorous Red Dot Gala in the awe-inspiring Aalto-Theater marks the culmination of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015. International design experts and manufacturers meet media representatives from all over the world on the red carpet. With the record number of 4,928 entries from 56 countries, the award ceremony is seen as the international design event of the year. The renowned competition for good design is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2015.

It is tradition for Professor Dr Peter Zec to host the impressive gala. The founder and CEO of Red Dot will welcome respected guests onto the stage, including internationally renowned designer Vivian Wai-kwan Cheng, the brilliant inventor of the USB stick Hideshi Hamaguchi and the influential designer Professor Werner Aisslinger - all of whom are part of the 38-member Red Dot jury in 2015.

1,200 audience members travelling from roughly 40 countries will watch as the laureates of the top individual award, the “Red Dot: Best of the Best”, receive their trophies on the stage of the Aalto-Theater. Of the nearly 5,000 entries in 2015, only 81 succeeded in winning this top individual award.

The entertainment will be provided by the cultural programme: With his unmistakeable sound, Denis Gäbel is one of Germany’s most sought-after saxophonists. The artist, who won the Jazz Award of the Bundesverband Musikindustrie (Federal Music Industry Association), will play a medley from his repertoire. In addition, the Aalto Ballett Essen will present excerpts from the piece “Odysseus”, in which choreographer Patrick Delcroix will produce a major topic of world literature in dance form.

The highlight of the award ceremony is the awarding of the Red Dot: Design Team of the Year. In 2015 the title goes to Robert Sachon & Bosch Home Appliances Design Team. Oskar Juhlin, Director of Product Design at Veryday, last year’s design team of the year from Sweden, will hand over the “Radius” challenge cup to the designers from Germany, thus officially crowning them “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year 2015” together with Professor Dr Peter Zec.

For generations, the Bosch name has stood for ground-breaking technology and outstanding quality. Consumers around the world associate the leading European home appliances brand with high functionality and award-winning design. The title of honour “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year” is not one that can be applied for. Some winners in prior years include Apple, BMW, Hilti, Grohe, Lenovo, LG, Porsche and Sony.

Afterwards, the Designers’ Night will take place in the Red Dot Design Museum. The lively aftershow party will bring together around 1,400 designers, decision-makers and media representatives – all those who want to celebrate, dance or network into the early hours in the midst of award-winning top design. Cult DJ Chrissi D! will create the party atmosphere in the museum’s wonderful industrial architecture. At the same time, the special exhibition “Design on Stage - Winners Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015” will be launched with all of the winning products.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary year of the competition, the exhibition entitled “Enduring, not ultimate form” tells the story of Design Zentrum NRW. Under the patronage of Professor Dr Norbert Lammert, President of the German Bundestag, historical products from the first winners’ exhibition in 1955 as well as the success story of the Red Dot Design Award will be presented using fascinating exhibits. On Designers’ Night, the anniversary exhibition is open until 1 a.m. in the morning in the adjacent Hall 5 at the world heritage site Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex.
