Winners of the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2018 honoured at the award ceremony in Singapore
The award ceremony of the Red Dot Award: Design Concept, which took place in Singapore on 28 September, has been a complete success: Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, as well as Ken Koo, President of Red Dot in Asia, handed over the well-deserved trophies to the proud competition winners. Furthermore, Yamaha Motor was honoured with the Red Dot: Luminary for the autonomous motorcycle “MOTOROiD”.
Platform for innovative prototypes and concepts
Recognising the need to acknowledge innovative design concepts, the Red Dot Award: Design Concept has created an unparalleled platform for new ideas, design research projects and prototypes from institutions, companies, design teams and designers. “The Red Dot Award: Design Concept is an indicator for the future of product and communication design – from electric and autonomous driving cars to smart technologies and robotics,” says Professor Dr. Peter Zec. Together with Ken Koo, he welcomed the winners on stage and congratulated them for their great design achievements.
Only 0.7% of all entries awarded with a Red Dot: Best of the Best
With 5,640 entries from 55 countries, the Red Dot Award: Design Concept reached a 19% increase in submissions this year. The jury members selected 333 concepts to be worthy a distinction. 265 projects received a Red Dot, while 28 concepts were awarded an Honourable Mention. Only 40 of the entries, just 0.7% of all submissions, were honoured with the Red Dot: Best of the Best.
Red Dot: Luminary goes to Yamaha Motor
This year, Yamaha Motor was pleased with receiving the Red Dot: Luminary trophy for MOTORiD, an autonomous motorcycle which creates an entirely new mobility experience. The concept could prevail against two other nominees: the lighting concept “SCHOTT LuminaLine” from SCHOTT and the built-in cooktop “Cookacross”, designed by Zaviè Design Studio. “This is a perfect example of cooperation between multiple disciplines of engineering and design where styling is not superimposed to give a better look in order to force marketing or advertising to drive sales. It is an integration of many actuator and sensor interfaces for a fully automated, artificial intelligence-controlled motorcycle,” says Red Dot jury member Professor Axel Thallemer about the winning concept.
Presentation of the winning concepts and prototypes
The evening concluded in the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore, located at Marina Bay, where the winning concepts and prototypes were showcased. Furthermore, they are presented in the Online Exhibition and in the Red Dot Design Yearbook for Design Concept 2018/2019 – a reference that they belong to the best in design.
