Award ceremony in Berlin: Red Dot Gala honours international design sector

4 November 2016, marked the celebration of the highlight of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016. The best designers of the year were presented with their trophies at the Red Dot Gala in Berlin. Communication designers and marketing professionals from around the world were celebrated for their design achievements in the Konzerthaus Berlin in the presence of an international audience. The winners of the Red Dot: Grand Prix have reason to be especially pleased. This year, the highest individual award was bestowed a total of nine times. The event was hosted by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot who led the proceedings, together with the jurors and speakers.

Award winners Red Dot: Grand Prix

Among the winners of the Red Dot: Grand Prix was the BBDO Group Germany GmbH for its “Das 2 Euro T-Shirt – Ein soziales Experiment” campaign (The 2 Euro T-shirt – a social experiment). The agency wanted to see if people would still buy a t-shirt if they were aware of the manufacturing conditions. To this end, a vending machine for t-shirts was built which showed participants a video before each purchase, which revealed how the t-shirt was produced. Afterwards, they could buy the t-shirt or donate the amount of money they had already paid.

Another winner of the Red Dot: Grand Priz was “The Real Time Brand”. This logo, developed for INEC (the Ecuadorian National Institute for Statistics) presents real time data that illustrates the population’s welfare. The logo consists of five rings that represent education, water shortage, housing, employment and happiness. Depending on the statistical information gathered by INEC they constantly change shape.

The “Ageing Wine Bottles” project by KOREFE commissioned by the Knipser wine estate was also one of the nine award-winners. In order to mark the 2012 vintage in style with customers and collectors around the world, Knipser commissioned packaging for a limited edition of its Cuvée XR. The intention was to make the exceptional nature of the wine visible and tangible with the help of a very special bottle. The result was a seamless copper cover that wraps around the bottle and makes the process of maturation visible from the outside. The longer the wine matures, the more the copper matures. Over the years, the bottle in this way becomes a unique piece of design, fashioned by time, in line with Knipser’s credo “True greatness comes with age”.

Agency and Brand of the Year 2016

The recipients of the honorary title for agency and brand of the year also received their trophies in the course of the award ceremony. The award for “Red Dot: Agency of the Year” this year went to Serviceplan. Florian Haller (Chief Executive Officer of the Serviceplan Group) and Alexander Schill (Chief Creative Officer) accepted the Stylus trophy from Leo Burnett, last year’s winner. Giving the laudation for the German agency group was none other than Antoine Monot, Jr. better known as the advertising character “Tech-Nick” of Serviceplan customer Saturn. The Audi group gained recognition for its innovative and continuous design solutions as the “Red Dot: Brand of the Year 2016”. Bernhard Neumann (Head of Experiential Marketing) received the award on behalf of the automotive group.

As is customary, the winner of the Red Dot: Junior Prize was also only announced at the Red Dot Gala. Whoever manages to secure the competition’s Red Dot: Best of the Best has the chance of receiving the Red Dot: Junior Prize, endowed with 10,000 Euros, for the best student project.
