True Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell Systems
State-of-the-art maritime powertrains are typically powered by diesel or gas engines, significantly contributing to global greenhouse gas emissions. These engines are not only harmful to the environment but also impose significant noise on ocean wildlife and passengers.
The unique and highly integrated maritime reformer fuel cell systems deliver safe and reliable on-board hydrogen production, offering a clean, quiet, and vibration-free powertrain solution that enhances comfort for everyone. A clean, streamlined housing reflects the ambition to provide accessible future technology for heavy-duty applications. These maritime systems can be retrofitted to ships, helping companies transition away from combustion engines.
Current truck and bus powertrains lack viable decarbonised solutions. Freudenberg addresses this by developing fuel cell systems running on pure hydrogen in the 100 kW power class. Combined with a battery, a hybrid powertrain offers the opportunity to decarbonise fleet operations. The core component of these systems is the ‘Hyperform’ stack, which transforms hydrogen (optionally reformed from LNG or methanol) into electric energy and water. The systems’ remarkable efficiency reduces costs and fuel consumption over a lifespan of up to 35,000 operating hours. Proven in initial prototypes, many partners have committed to integrating this technology into their vehicles and vessels.
