Exhibition Design
smac – State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz
The architectural design of the State Museum of Archaeology (smac) in Chemnitz, Germany, had to tackle the challenge of combining the historical structure of the heritage-protected building by architect Erich Mendelsohn with the new tasks of a contemporary museum. This was realised through three floors dedicated to being exhibition spaces for presenting specific time periods ranging from pre-history up to the 19th century. As a result, the room narratives change, becoming increasingly structured and enclosed, with the floor graphics transforming from amorphous lines to a rectangular grid pattern.
