Suffering from self-doubt due to his large nose, Cyrano de Bergerac lent his poetic talent to help his friend win the heart of Roxanne, a woman they both adored. Cyrano himself remained in the background, which is why he also remains "masked" on this poster, with the superimposition of the subjects succinctly capturing the essence of the play.
