BraSatt 01 Forest Planting Machine

Södra’s BRASATT01 alleviates the physically demanding task of forest rejuvenation while significantly enhancing sapling survival rates. This prototype integrates multiple areas of expertise to achieve its goals, using advanced technology for optimal planting routes, ensuring efficiency and sustainability in forestry management. The planting route is meticulously planned by an operator using a wireless tablet. It leverages satellite images, RTK GPS, and a user-defined work area to chart the optimal path. This route is wirelessly transmitted to the machine, which then autonomously follows it after operator confirmation. The robust Ebeaver platform forms the machine’s foundation. Equipped with sensors, the machine identifies ideal planting spots. A robotic arm selects a sapling from onboard storage, placing it into a combined scoop and plant chute. This scoop digs into the ground, bringing mineral-rich undersoil to the surface, serving as both a nutritious substrate and a pest barrier. The sapling is then inserted into this fresh soil and tamped down before the machine moves to the next spot. The main design challenge was balancing form and communication, creating a machine that feels robust and trustworthy without being overly cuddly. Lights and sound indicators ensure usability and safety, with the operator standing at a safe distance. Red Dot Award: Design Concept | Concept | Autonomous
