Celebrating the best of 2023 at the Award Ceremony in Singapore

Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2023 Results

The design community eagerly awaits the announcement of winners for the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2023. Those who design the future lead the way. With a commitment to recognising design excellence, the award continues its tradition of honouring the best in the field. Only the best are awarded the symbol of quality for good design - the Red Dot. Less than 6% of submitted entries by companies, design studios, research institutions and designers were being recognised for their design merit by the Red Dot Jury this year.

Designers celebrate their achievements at the Award Ceremony in Singapore

Winning designers from around the world traveled to Singapore once again on the 27 September to celebrate their achievements at the Award Ceremony. Since its inception in 2005, the Red Dot Award: Design Concept began as an outlet for design teams and designers to showcase their latest research without customers constraints. Today, it has matured into the largest and most prestigious international award for design concepts at a professional level.

“Designers face challenges every day when developing new ideas. In the pursuit of breakthroughs, projects that are novel and innovative are inherently uncertain and risky.” Asia President of Red Dot, Mr. Ken Koo described “We are privileged to be trusted with the opportunity to evaluate and present to the world the best of their courageous pursuit.”

From An Idea To The Concept: An Outline Of The Almost Unthinkable

Many of the designs we see today will be available in a different form tomorrow or at another point in the future. As the circumstances around us change, so does the design of every single item and element, too. It starts with an idea, followed by a concept.

“Red Dot Award: Design Concept is a competition that shows that the almost unthinkable can be given form.” explains Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot. “Our award paves the way for the design avant-garde and their distinguished products of the future, emerging from current challenges.”

Five outstanding Red Dot: Best of the Best design concepts emerged at the top and were nominated for the Red Dot: Luminary, the highest level of recognition accorded at the Red Dot Award: Design Concept. The minds behind these outstanding design projects come from a diverse set of geography and background. They vary from well-known organisations to independent design studios, from design students to design professionals.

The nominees for Red Dot: Luminary 2023 are All Forms Of Life, a series of screen-printed artworks that use abstracted Chinese characters to represent various stages of life and states of being throughout a person’s life by Shenzhen Yixiaojianda Creative Culture Company in China; Feldschwarm, designed to be a modular and scalable solution for semiautonomous operations in the fields by Technische Universität Dresden in Germany; KulingConnect, a user-friendly app that revolutionises the pre-boarding phase of employment by RWE Offshore Wind in Germany; Grass, using light to convey various gestures of movement in the city through data by Daylight Effect Production Company in Taiwan; and Lunet, is a low-cost, 3D printable mechanical finger prosthesis by University of Houston in the United States.

Lunet is the winner of Red Dot: Luminary 2023

This year’s Red Dot: Luminary spotlights an innovative idea aimed at revolutionising low-cost mechanical finger prosthetics. Lunet is a mechanical finger prosthesis that is produced entirely through 3D printing, designed to provide an accessible solution for restoring finger functionality.

Prof. Dr Peter Zec and Mr Ken Koo presented the Red Dot: Luminary trophy to Mr David Edquilang and Prof. Jeff Feng of University of Houston. The Award Ceremony concluded with the presentation of Red Dot Award: Design Concept winners’ exhibition at the Red Dot Design Museum which overlooks the waterfront promenade of Singapore’s Marina Bay.
