This is an illustration for “The Tale of the Wazir of King Yunan and Rayyan the Doctor”. The king’s throne and other background content are drawn with complicated lines, showing the extravagant court life. The dying king and the decapitated head of the doctor constitute the foreground. Compared with the complicated depiction of the background, the figures in the foreground are characterised by much plainer styling. That makes them stand out from the secular atmosphere of the background and expresses the absurdity of the fable: the moment when the dead doctor gets his revenge on the evil king is entirely the desire of the storyteller.
