Since the work is usually done behind closed doors, the development of new machines for use in industrial production was for a long time driven purely by technical aspects. However, this field has increasingly opened up to the sphere of influence from design, and designers have come up with excellent solutions here. The PS65 is a vertical machining centre developed specifically for precision moulding and die-casting applications. Entirely reinterpreting the formal principles of this type of machine, its development also focused on reducing the machine’s dimensions. With a highly compact design, this machine features a reduced footprint, and with its space-saving design takes up less space in the machine room. Its flowing appearance is taken up in the front of the machine: it features a highly ergonomic design structure, opens toward the front and thus reduces operator fatigue. These user-friendly characteristics of the PS65 are enhanced by a generously dimensioned window and working space, as well as a distinctive balanced handle with a rotatable panel. In addition, dynamically shaped chamfers on the machine front lend this machine a highly modern appearance – it suggests the qualities of power and precision.

By awarding the PS65 vertical machining centre by Japanese maker Makino Asia, the jury underlines the significance of design in the development and creation of machine tools. At the centre of the jury’s evaluation was the front of the machine, which emphasises the technical function and quality in precision moulding and die-casting applications. Due to its three-dimensional semantics, the user-friendly and ergonomic design of the window and working space conveys a high sense of precision and quality.
