Stop-Motion Animation
of Smaller Things
The title of this animation refers to the novel “The God of Small Things” by Indian writer Arundhati Roy. “Small things”, in this case, refers to moths. While Roy introduces the moth as a symbol of fear and unhappiness, it is also commonly associated with hidden desires. The film stages the insects in carefully choreographed close-ups, culminating in a finale in which a moth is drawn to the flame of a candle. The whirling movement of wings draws the viewer into the action and, in combination with piano runs, stimulates the imagination to further trace the meaning of the mystical animal.
