Baba Yaga
In Slavic folk tales, Baba Yaga is often described as an old woman with supernatural powers that lives deep in the forest and has a voracious appetite for human flesh. In this particular story, however, Baba Yaga helps a girl, Vasilisa, after she has completed numerous difficult tasks. This piece stages Baba Yaga’s ambiguous nature by playing with positive and negative space. A mood of mysticism is transmitted by a limited colour palette of blues and greys. Only Baba Yaga’s face and Vasilisa’s dress display a warmer colour, drawing additional attention to the characters.
