With the sense of good communication design and creativity: the jury 2017 (part 2)

The heart of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design is its jury. With its expertise, it assesses thousands of submissions each year on the basis of established criteria. In 2017, there are 24 globally recognised experts who meet in Essen, Germany, to jointly decide in a multi-day process about the awarding of the coveted label “Red Dot”. Some of these experts are repeatedly part of the jury. Among others Rainer Hirt, Eric Chang, Kelley Cheng and Michel Chanaud will select the winners of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017.

Sound design specialist
At least since 2003, the year in which he founded the information portal for acoustic brand management “audio-branding.de”, Rainer Hirt is a well-known figure in specialist circles of sound design. After his communication design studies he was also co-founder of “audity”, an agency for audio branding and audio interaction. Asked what he liked most about his profession, he told Red Dot, “being allowed to combine both my passions: sound production and a fascination with brands."

Allround talent
She is one of the leading designers in Singapore: Juror Kelley Cheng is an architect and chief editor of the magazine “The Singapore Architect”. She also leads “The Press Room”, a publishing and design consultancy that designs projects from books to film sets. She imparts her knowledge as adjunct professor at the Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), as member of the advisory panel for the Singapore Polytechnic Design School and for Singapore Contemporary Young Artists. What she would do if she had the chance? Studying for a master’s degree and then a doctorate.

Marketing expert
Also active as a lecturer is juror Eric Chang. He is currently teaching at three universities in China and is specialised in marketing, direct marketing, customer relationship management and digital marketing. He is also an expert in the theory and application of integrated and digital marketing. In 1996, he joined the “Ogilvy & Mather Group Taiwan” and is currently vice president and managing director of several Ogilvy agencies. For Eric Chang, good communication design means that consumers understand the message at a single glance and then take action right away, for example through clicks, purchases or comments.

Expert in graphic design
About 30 years longer in the business as his jury colleague Eric Chang is the Frenchman Michel Chanaud. Already in 1969, he opened his first design company, afterwards he founded an agency for graphic design, which works for large advertising companies. In the eighties he became CEO of a company that quickly became one of the leading distributors for Apple in France as well as the most important dealer for Adobe, Quark and Macromedia. In 1989, he founded “Pyramid”, and in 1994 he published the magazine “étapes:”, which is one of the leading figures in graphic design. He is also the director of “Pyramid Éditions”, the largest design book publishing company in France, currently holding 450 titles. His favorite quote is by Steve Jobs: “Design is not what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”
