Successful Global Players

Whether Lenovo, Kartell or Apple: Global Players successful in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018

From Apple, Blanco, Bosch and Bulgari over Canyon Bicycles, Ferrari, Google and Kartell to Lenovo, LG, Philips, Sony and Veryday – in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018, big brands have proven impressively that they can reinvent themselves over and over again. Their products did not only impress with their distinctive innovative strength but also with their simple elegance. During the Red Dot Gala on 9 July, the proud winners received their trophies and certificates and were officially honoured for their great design achievement.

Lenovo was awarded two times with the highest distinction

Lenovo was asked to come on stage even two times during the awarding ceremony: the international company obtained two of the coveted Red Dot Trophies. The “ThinkPad X1 Tablet” of the computer and smartphone manufacturer convinced the Red Dot Jury in particular with its user-friendly design to award the distinction “Red Dot: Best of the Best”. The notebook, which can be quickly turned into a tablet by removing the keyboard, offers incomparable working comfort, thanks to its excellent performance features. The computer with a successful combination of stability and slim shape is equipped with a redesigned, functional kickstand. “This pleasantly lightweight tablet conveys the comfort and feel of a full-fledged notebook. Thin, compact and very elegant at the same time, its design language simply fascinates,” stated the Red Dot Jury about the awarded product.

The sensor clothing “SmartVest” was also awarded a Red Dot: Best of the Best. The functional and fashionable garment is able to perform an electrocardiogram as well as an echocardiogram to provide an accurate assessment of one’s cardiac activity. On the inside, the SmartVest features 12 flexible electrodes woven into the fabric for real-time acquisition and wireless transmission of human body bioelectrical impulses. The textile sensors do not require gel or liquid contact. Yet, they effectively maintain conductivity with the skin at all times.

Kartell scores double points in the competition

Kartell could be delighted about two distinctions as well. The Italian furniture manufacturer received with its table lamp “Aledin” the highest award of the competition, the Red Dot: Best of the Best. “In an impressive manner, Aledin realises the idea of a transparent lamp that reveals its interior to the beholder. It embodies a merger of advanced, sophisticated technology with a fascinating design. Available in the two models of “Tec” and “Dec”, the lamp is very powerful and lends itself for use in offices as well as in domestic homes. The designs of their diffusers have been adapted perfectly to the respective area of use,” commented the Red Dot Jury on the award-winning product.

In addition, Kartell received the distinction “Red Dot” for the table “Sir Gio”. The sculptural piece of furniture, made of polycarbonate and glass, convinced the Jury in particular by the exciting combination of different materials. The table is available in ten different colours and suits both classic and modern interiors.

Apple nine times successful in the competition

Apple earned nine distinctions in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2018. The Apple Watch Series 3, the 10.5” iPad Pro as well as a fitting leather case, the iPhone X with a matching leather folio, the iPhone 8, the speaker “HomePod” and the Apple Pencil Case were awarded the Red Dot for their good design quality.

The iMac Pro was even awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best. The Red Dot Jury about the product: “The design of the iMac Pro fascinates with the courage and the consistency of its implementation. The innovative thermal architecture masters the task of providing maximum technical performance in an elegant, purist all-in-one enclosure. Uncompromising in terms of component quality as well as in form and material, the iMac Pro uniquely combines performance and aesthetics – embodying an iconic design for professional users.”
