Newcomer countries in the Red Dot Award: Product Design

Every year, the Red Dot Award: Product Design is in search of the best that the world of industrial design currently has to offer. In 2015, 1,443 products from 44 nations were honoured. Besides awardees from countries which are strong in design - such as Scandinavia, USA, Japan or Italy - numerous objects from states which are regarded as newcomers in the field of design were distinguished: for example products from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, Turkey as well as from Peru. This development shows that design as the basis for business success gains in importance. And as varied as the manufacturer countries are the products of the Red Dot winners: among them are a cable lock, an LED pendant lamp as well as a chair and a water tap.

The cable lock “Saly Wheel” from the Israeli manufacturer Knollan convinced the jury with its innovative locking mechanism that is both safe and easy to operate. Instead of using wheels or dialers, this Red Dot winning product opens via a joystick-like button that can be moved in four directions in any desired sequence. The numbers and letters around the button enable password selection in any length and easy-to memorise by meaning.

The LED pendant luminaire “U-line” by Ikizler Lighting from Istanbul combines a decorative and elegant appearance with modern lighting technology. The three-dimensional interplay between two luminaires lends this lamp a distinctive overall appearance. The housing is recyclable while the mercury-free LED luminaire is designed for a long lifetime of 50,000 hours.

Further, the stool “Fawn” by Gazzda from Bosnia and Herzegovina is characterised by the central design themes tactility, lightness and transparency, as well as a minimal number of materials and harmonious proportions. Even though the chair is designed for mass production, it conveys the quality of real handcrafted carpentry.

By the Peruvian manufacturer comes the faucet “Modus”. With the combination of a simple cylinder and a flat plate in the water tap, Modus represents a very plain solution. The unit has been designed for a regional market that asks for solely cold-water taps at an affordable price. The Red Dot jury stated: “There could hardly be a more simple and distinct tap design. In addition, Modus meets the demand for an energy efficient cold-water tap.”
