Communication design on the highest level: excellent posters

The Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017 is well underway. Agencies, designers and companies from all over the world are currently called upon to submit their well-designed and creative works and projects from the field of communication design. A total of 18 categories are available for participation, one of them is “Poster”. The posters which are distinguished with a Red Dot have a high signal function. They are a firm component within comprehensive advertising measures. In the 2016 competition, two works which particularly address current social issues and convincingly implement them visually were awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best.

“Noise shooting”: about the noise of a city
A poster which argues with the high noise level recorder of the metropolis Hong Kong was conceived for an exhibition of Hong Kong Professional Photographers Network. The theme of the exhibition is “Noise Shooting” and is implemented on the poster by means of a restless design: In the centre of the creation stands the number “12”, the edition of the exhibition which was constructed by a multiplied photo of a stressed working face. The typography of the poster seems handwritten and inaccurate and thereby generates additional restlessness. Not only the graphics argue with noise or restlessness, also the material was chosen suitably: by means of a special procedure the pressure was brought on bubble wrap. This invites the visitor to create noise by crushing the air chambers himself. This active connection between content and design makes this poster especially original.

“The Gilding”: a social phenomenon
The Gilding” poster series acts on a social phenomenon in China: products or qualifications are valued higher and often have better market opportunities when they come from abroad. Therefore, for example furniture produced in China is exported to Italy and is then re-imported. Chinese students are also affected by this trend: they often go abroad to improve their value in the labor market. The poster series transforms the theme with the colours black and gold and pursues a typographic approach: a motif shows a bar code consisting of gold bars. Another poster explains the gilding phenomenon by a black font on a golden background. The Red Dot jury praised the excellent concept and the skilfully crafted implementation.
