Big brands prove design competence in the Red Dot Award 2019
More than 5,500 products were entered in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2019 – from small and medium-sized companies as well as from global players. Only 80 of them received the highest distinction of the competition. Whether Apple, Ducati, Ferrari, Hansgrohe, LG, Philips, Porsche or Robert Bosch Hausgeräte – that many of the products, which received the Red Dot: Best of the Best, are manufactured by internationally renowned companies, demonstrates once more that they know about the importance of good design. They convinced the jury with products which are characterised by unparalleled innovative strength, perfect functionality and pure elegance.
Apple Watch Series 4: completely redesigned
“Totally familiar and yet completely redesigned” – this is how Apple describes the Apple Watch Series 4. The display of the smartwatch is more than 30% larger and provides the user with detailed information on health and activities. The watch integrates an electrial heart sensor which sends messages when recognising high or low heart frequencies and rhythm disturbances. Furthermore, the Apple Watch convinced the jury with a revised digital crown with haptic feedback and with automatic training detection.
Saving energy with the Nest Thermostat E from Google subsidiary “Nest”
Also, a product from Google subsidiary “Nest” moved the jury to award it the highest distinction in the competition. With the Nest Thermostat E, the consumer saves energy as it adapts to his or her daily routine. For example, the thermostat regulates the temperature and turns off the water heater when nobody is in the house. The user can control the temperature from everywhere – be it manually from home, with the help of the voice control or on the way via the Nest app.
Ferrari Monza SP1: inspired by the past
Keyword “being on the way”:With the Ferrari Monza SP1, Ferrari, too, scored in the Red Dot Award. The sports car is a special limited edition and belongs to the “Icona” segment. The design draws inspiration from the formative Ferrari models of the 1950s, but is equipped with the most modern technology. Designed as a single-seater, the sports car comes without roof and windscreen. This gave the designers the freedom to create unique proportions which result in a feeling of blistering speed, normally only experienced by Formula 1 drivers. The patented “virtual wind shield” deviates a part of the air flow and ensures driving comfort.
LG Signature OLED TV (R9): rollable TV
Likewise, LG belongs to the winners of the Red Dot: Best of the Best. With the Signature OLED TV (R9), the company presented its first rollable TV. It can be rolled up when not in use, providing the option to put it under the window or at the centre of a living room, for example. In this case, the product is used as an audio player, melting into the space like a piece of furniture. When the screen is rolled out, it convinces with its classic, stable form. The sound system and the high resolution of the OLED TV make it a real premium product.
Reduction to the essential: BOSCH - accent I line carbon black
Also, the kitchen appliances of the series “accent I line carbon black” from Robert Bosch Hausgeräte perfectly fit their environment. They aim at the fact that the fusion of kitchen and living space goes along with a desire for greater simplicity in design. With its plain shape, which focuses on the essentials while conveying a sense of value and quality, the series creates a new balance between kitchen appliances and furniture. The silhouette and the subtle presence are defined by a fascinating interplay of light and shadow.
