The Fading Portraits Project
The “Fading Portraits Project” for Amnesty International took place on 30 August 2014, the International Day of the Disappeared. The idea was to show, literally and metaphorically, a handful of political activists who have disappeared by drawing their portraits on the pavement with water. US artist Nicholas Kashian expertly executed the street art performance by using the pavement in Berlin’s central district of Mitte as a canvas. Gone without a trace in a matter of minutes, the artworks highlighted the fate of these activists to attention-grabbing effect. Billboards and banners accompanied the performance.
