Peel Chair

Peel Chair takes inspiration from the natural phenomenon of bark peeling from trees, and the iconic, timeless plywood furniture of modernist Marcel Breuer. Peel’s design plays into the illusion that it is made from a single sheet of formed plywood that has been peeled back and folded into shape. The backrest, legs, and seat pan are joined at seamless contact points to form an aesthetically pleasing continuous line through the side profile. Peel Chair is constructed from two simple moulded plywood parts: a seat and a frame. Plywood was chosen because it is a low-cost material that can be sustainably sourced and manufactured in a way that significantly reduces wood waste. Using a large hydraulic press, thin birch veneers are arranged cross-grain, glued, and pressed with a European Oak veneer finish. This wood lamination manufacturing technique makes the chair extremely durable, and the simple joinery method using dowel pins contributes to its longevity. Peel Chair is a versatile addition to homes, offices, and other public spaces due to its striking sculptural geometry and repeating form when stacked. We built a rough prototype out of CNC-machined MDF layers stacked together early in the design process. This gave us a solid sense of the chair’s design proportions and ergonomics, allowing us to refine and fine-tune the design. Our vision for the Peel Chair has been realised, crafted and documented during the production of a small sample run in Hungary in March 2023.
