Layering

Back Download

This publication realises the task of creating an artful book that sensitively documents the “layering” philosophy of Japanese culture, interpreted by renowned architect Kengo Kuma for Alberni, his first residential tower in North America. Inspired by the architect’s thesis and the rich layers of the building’s design, the process included the sourcing of the book materials – natural wood, 100 per cent cotton paper and handmade washi paper – to offer varying opacities of light quality and texture. Materials, production methods and bindery techniques for the clamshell case all aim to reflect the traditions of Japanese artisanal craftsmanship.
