It is almost a little surprising that there are still product innovations that manage without new materials, smart functions or the latest technologies – and which yet are new, different and trendsetting for their industry. One example of this is Karat RS, a clay roof tile whose history goes back to 1966. Back then, it caused a sensation as the first roof tile model that also works on a roof pitch of just seven degrees. The tile became a classic and remained successful on the market in unchanged form for more than 50 years. Ten years after Erlus began to gradually modernise its product range in collaboration with the “speziell” design studio, the company also ventured into the further development of the Karat tile, the manufacturer’s premium product, which was to benefit from all previous findings. In an evolutionary innovation process, the essential characteristics of the classic tile were worked out, all design and formal details were analysed, contemporary functions were added and brand-typical features were made visible. The linear, sleek design language is now reflected in all functional elements. However, the tile is truly innovative above all in terms of its functionality: With a view to future extreme weather conditions, it has been given a deep, all-round triple fold to keep driving rain away from the sub-roof even at a roof pitch of seven degrees. The distinctively folded 4-tile corner offers a high level of storm resistance while a new, elegantly integrated hold-down system with hooks additionally increases wind suction resistance. Improved ribbing on the underside makes the tile hail-resistant up to a grain size of 4 cm and safe to walk on. To optimise handling during laying, stacking locks have also been added to securely anchor the tile packs. The tile itself is still made of clay. “The degree of innovation of this roof tile was achieved through the design alone,” said the jury. “Karat RS impresses with its attention to detail and the sophistication with which a classic has been sensitively yet fundamentally reworked. This roof tile is a sophisticated product that shows how much experience has gone into the material and mould construction. The end product is of impressive quality – both functionally and aesthetically – and in a convincingly way combines tradition and innovation.”
