Encroach on Culture

Back Download

Zooming in on Japan’s whaling culture, these works take a stand for whale conservation. The posters associate the image of a living whale with specialties like sake, sushi and oden. While the proportions in the pictures imply that the marine mammal is at the mercy of man, the truncated shapes of eating utensils invite viewers to fill the space outside the posters with their imagination. A red circle on white background, reminiscent of the Japanese flag, establishes a link between blood and the whaling nation Japan, aiming to fundamentally question this type of consumption.
