Towards the end of the 1970s, Porsche Design developed the Military Chronograph made of stainless steel. The iconic timepiece stood out not only because of its superior reliability but turned out also to have the ideal watch design for aviation owing to its glare-free display. The “Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition” breathes new life into this legend 40 years after its inception and introduces technological innovations. “The in every respect harmonious design, from the differentiated indicators to the scratch-resistant, lastingly beautiful material of the case,” convinced the jury. A novel material developed by Porsche Design, titanium carbide, makes the watch case even more resilient and, compared to its predecessor, extremely lightweight and hypoallergenic. Like the original, the matt black dial of this chronograph ensures optimal readability. And the reissue also comes with the “BUND” leather strap which made the Military Chronograph so comfortable to wear and provided protection in extreme temperatures. The meticulous transfer of design elements from the historic role model to the ”Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition” creates an unmistakable link between tradition and progress. The “TiC” logo on the dial, which highlights the use of titanium carbide, is a reinterpretation of the 3H symbol featured on the Military Chronograph. In the past, “3H” indicated the use of tritium, which ensured readability of the hands and dial numerals in the dark. Today, the chronograph uses a pale, blue luminous material from Super-LumiNova instead of the radioactive material. While the dial of the Military version for the flying squadron of the U.S. Air Force featured a tiger head, the reissue shows a screaming marmot, known as “Mankei” in the Austrian region of Pinzgau, to point to the area around Zell am See where the Studio F. A. Porsche and the “Mankei” hut, hub of the Porsche community, are located. The timepiece is powered by a Porsche Design calibre WERK 01.240. Its flyback function makes it possible to start, stop and reset the watch in a single step which, together with its robust case, makes the chronograph ideal for outdoor, winter sports and racing activities. The jury concluded: “This is a great, well-made watch steeped in tradition that will last far into the future.”
