Baba Yaga
The digital painting portrays Baba Yaga and Vasilisa, two figures from Russian folk tales. Baba Yaga’s malignancy is emphasised by the dominant shape of the figure, while a skull refers to her cannibalistic impulses. On the other hand, Vasilisa’s simplified features express timidity and naivety. The doll, which is impressively positioned in front of the girl, plays a key role in the story. The dramatic quality of the scene is further enhanced by juxtaposing contrasting colours, such as red and green or blue and orange.
