Winner’s Takeaways from Autodesk University
Autodesk, the official design software partner of the Red Dot Award: Design Concept, selected a team from National Yunlin University of Science & Technology in Taiwan for a trip to attend Autodesk University in Las Vegas, USA, in December 2014. Chih-Yuan Lee and Wen-Min Gu with advising Professor Ching-Hsu Chang won this unique opportunity by demonstrating the best use of digital visualisation and simulation techniques on their design concept, “Garden System”.
Autodesk University is a series of annual events that take place around the world where designers and industry thought leaders convene to learn, network, and celebrate the power of design technology. Chih-Yuan Lee shares his experiences in an interview with the Red Dot Design Award.
Red Dot: What left the deepest impression in you at Autodesk University? And why?
Chih-Yuan Lee: I attended so many great design talks and innovation forums at Autodesk University but what impressed me the most is how extensively the company’s 3D design apps and software is used within and across design professions. Interconnected and interoperable, they enable designers and engineers to collaborate and communicate with one another and push the boundaries of design projects of all sizes.
What is your biggest takeaway from your experience at the Autodesk University?
I learnt so much at Autodesk University but perhaps the three biggest takeaways for me were:
1. how the integration of design software and 3D printers enables rapid prototyping of designs;
2. the real-world breakthroughs in the areas of energy conservation, environmental protection, education, spatial design, and product design and utilisation; as well as
3. the possibilities for networking and collaboration using advanced 3D design software in an era of cloud computing.
Moving forward, how do you think attending AU University will shape your thinking and approach when you design new products / projects?
I learnt so much about the latest design trends and 3D software innovations, including how design software is being used in academic research, industrial application, as well as in everyday life. As 3D printing, cloud computing and surface modelling continue to become more advanced, I look forward to leveraging these tools and techniques to design products more quickly and easily.
