The Red Dot: Grand Prix honours extraordinary communication design

With the launch of the participation phase of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016, the international creative industry is once again asked to submit their outstanding projects and campaigns. Participants who can convince the jury with above-average works may hope to receive the highest distinction of the competition, the Red Dot: Grand Prix. Last year, the renowned advertising agency Scholz & Friends was awarded in the category “advertising" for the campaign “Closed for Inventory".

A visual inventory to promote the Berliner Philharmoniker

Traditionally every summer the symphony orchestras in Germany take a long holiday break – so do the Berliner Philharmoniker. The aim was to use this break for an eye-catching campaign that promotes the upcoming season. The campaign “Closed for Inventory" declared the summer break as a time when other businesses have to close for inventory. Therefore, the orchestra as well as the concert hall of the Berliner Philharmoniker – from the musicians, their instruments to objects like chairs and music stands – were photographed, put into a systematic order and arranged just like on an inventory list. As even the most mundane objects are thus pictured as works of art, the campaign underlined the outstanding character of the orchestra. The variety of posters drew a lot of attention in the city of Berlin and gave an ideal prelude for a successful concert season of the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Independent jury selects the most creative achievements

The campaign “Closed for Inventory" convinced the members of the Red Dot jury with its idea to illustrate the summer break of the Berliner Philharmoniker as an visual inventory. According to the panel of experts the idea of taking inventory is on the one hand an excellent opportunity to use the free summer period to communicate with the people of Berlin and visitors to the city. On the other hand it conveys and demonstrates what the Berliner Philharmoniker orchestra has to offer. The execution of the clearly arranged instruments, the musicians or the objects is outstanding and resulted in a design that is as consistent as it is aesthetically appealing.
