Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 - Apple and MB&F awarded with highest single distinction in the category "Watches"

In Red Dot's 60th anniversary the jury evaluated 4,928 submissions from 56 countries. Only 81 entries were bestowed the honour of the top award, the “Red Dot: Best of the Best”, which is the highest single award in the competition. The US company Apple and the Swiss manufacturer MB&F received this distinction in the category “Watches”.

In order to respond to the high number of submissions in a professional manner, the number of product categories was increased to 31: In addition to new independent categories such as “Materials and surfaces” and “Jewellery”, the category “Watches" was added. In this class, only Apple and MB&F were valued with the distinction “Red Dot: Best of the Best”. Eleven watches were awarded with the Red Dot for high design quality and one entry received the Honourable Mention for a particularly well-executed aspect of design work.

With its new smartwatch, Apple joins the rich tradition of watchmaking and combines new technologies with the typical Apple design. The watch for instance features “Force Touch”, which senses the difference between a tap and a press, and the “Taptic Engine” enables a new vocabulary of notifications based on sound and contact. The “Horological Machine N°6 'Space Pirate'” is an exclusive watch by MB&F, limited to 50 pieces. It consists of 475 components with a body characterised by a biomorphic case and transparent sapphire crystal domes.

On 29 June 2015, Red Dot honours the laureates of the Red Dot: Best of the Best on stage in Essen’s Aalto-Theater. In addition, all winners and jury statements will be presented in the Red Dot Design Yearbook and at Red Dot Online.
