Product development: three Questions to Gabriela Ronzová

Engineer Gabriela Ronzová was recently awarded at the Red Dot Award: Design Concept for the concept ShellTec (Computed Tomography Scanner). It is about a CT scanner with a shape that makes everyday use and daily maintenance easier. The ergonomic design ensures maximum comfort for the patient and easy use by the staff.

Red Dot spoke with Gabriela Ronzová about her background and further developments.

Red Dot: Tell us something about your design philosophy. Was there a specific approach when conceptualising ShellTec (Computed Tomography Scanner)?
Gabriela Ronzová: A special focus was placed on ergonomics of this medical device, ensuring maximum comfort on the patient's side and easy use by the staff. Another ShellTec innovation lies in suspending the patient table above the ground, allowing easier maintenance and cleaning around the CT scanner. This medical device has an elegant and smooth shape without any visible technical parts, which should also have a positive influence on the psychological comfort of patients and personnel.

What was the biggest challenge when advancing your design concept?
It is a challenge preparing data for products that are requiring strict demands for a precise construction in the range of millimeters. Shelltec has to work with exact parameters for the correct use of the scanner.

When will Shelltec (Computed Tomography Scanner) be on the market?Compared to smaller objects, the development of a CT scanner takes a lot of time from the concept to a saleable product. It’s in the nature of the product, its high acquisition and production costs.

Currently, up-and-coming talents, designers, companies and universities from all over the world have the opportunity to enter their design visions in the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2015 and put their whole creative potential to the test.
