On the occasion of the 130th birthday of Mies van der Rohe: design chairs with classic potential
On 27 March 2016 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe would have been 130 years old. He is considered to be one of the most important architects of the 20th century. With his simple, reduced architectural style he formed the motto “less is more”. Besides his visionary buildings made out of steel and glass, Mies van der Rohe also designed furniture: among others the “Barcelona chair” was designed for one of his most famous works, the German Pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona in 1929. Based on this classic design chair and in honour of Mies van der Rohe, the following examples illustrate what contemporary chair design has to offer. All models received the highest destinction of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015, the Red Dot: Best of the Best.
Swivel chair with history
The G 125 wooden swivel chair was developed to mark the 125th anniversary of the traditional Swiss company Girsberger. In its early beginnings, the company was successful in the production of piano stools that combined formal simplicity with sophisticated functionality. The G 125 wooden swivel chair shows a highly successful reduction to essential elements. As an alternative design to swivel chairs today, its design combines formal minimalism and a fascinatingly intelligent functionality. The innovative concept of a flexible torsion rod allows for excellent seating comfort. Its high quality is brought to perfection through the choice of fine woods as material.
Innovative multipurpose chair
A multipurpose chair has to be shaped to offer the most diverse seating options, so that its design complies with certain functional standards right from the start. The Trea multipurpose chair from the company Humanscale fascinates with its distinctive lines that merge frame and seating shell in a harmonious way. Since it is made of only a few parts that assemble in a modular manner, it is also highly durable. Another important aspect is that the chair boasts outstandingly good seating comfort. Functional details such as the sophisticated reclining mechanism and a backrest shell with glass inlay enable an intuitive sitting posture. Users sit on it as comfortable as on a special kind of office chair, although it is a multipurpose chair.
Thin steel construction
The minimalist design of the MOVE.ME mobile conference and meeting concept equipment showcases a fascinating, clear language of form. The design looks filigree and visualises its enormous flexibility at the very first glance. An impressive eye-catcher is embodied in the intelligent and filigree thin steel construction. This makes the chair light as a feather and easy to transport. Furthermore, the moveable mount feature of the seat shell ensures relaxed and dynamic sitting. It is ergonomically well thought-out and supports any alteration in sitting position, something that is particularly important for long periods of sitting.
