Sound Exhibition

Sound of Stuttgart

Zurück Download

With the motto “Eyes shut, ears open”, the special exhibition “Sound of Stuttgart” became the urban science centre for the sound of the city. At various interactive stations, visitors were invited to experience acoustic phenomena around the sense of hearing and thus find out what structure-borne sound means, learn how noise and anti-noise can cancel each other out, or explore what various Stuttgart city locations sound like during the day and at night. Instead of creating spaces that are dominated by visual attractions and elements, as is often the case with such exhibitions, “Sound of Stuttgart” featured darkened and soundproof cabins conceived as sensory spaces that are as neutral as possible and which invited visitors to fully engage with the audio and sound experience. Finally stepping back into the light, visitors could themselves contribute to the Stuttgart soundscape. Using hands-on resources like paper, marbles or a bicycle bell, visitors could produce sound effects to bring a selected Stuttgart city scenery to life.

Begründung der Jury

The exhibition on the specific sounds of the city of Stuttgart exemplifies how sensory effects can be portrayed within a simple infrastructure and through recordings of outstanding quality. The staging of the experiences in dark cabins with simple graphic instructions and, above all, the wealth of ideas that visitors are offered acoustically, have been brilliantly implemented both technically and artistically.
