Play Together

Play Together is a public swing designed to increase the emotional bond between parent and child. Children usually find it difficult to swing independently due to their height, and parents have to assist by pushing from behind. However, this not only reduces face-to-face communication, but it also tires parents out. Any fun in this experience is felt unilaterally. Play Together allows both parent and child to enjoy the swing. Using the principle of differential transmission, parents can power the swing without pushing. The two seats are controlled by a rotary switch which locks a bevel gear that swings in opposite directions at the same time. The rotary switch can also be unlocked so that both seats can be used independently, maintaining the original use of a swing. Materials are chosen with its users in mind. The grip on the swings as well as the seat surface are made from non-slip, soft rubber for comfort. The seat moulds itself around the user, which increases friction and decreases the possibility of slipping off. There is a rubber bumper where the swing connects to the frame, reducing metal collisions. The overall colour palette is cheerful and reflects the design principles of children’s products.
