Matchmaking Corner

The matchmaking corner is a place in China where middle-class parents can seek out potential partners for their children, using family background, jobs, wealth and appearance as matchmaking criteria. Complex individuals are reduced to superficial personal information on cardboards. The phenomenon represents a magical, microcosm of the Chinese society. This project distilled the main types of singles on display into nine fairly representative characters and created a humorous dictionary. With precise descriptions and attractive illustrations, this piece of work draws attention to the fact that behind each figure lies a social issue in modern-day China.
