Huddling for Retirement Yilan House Residential Design
Huddling for Retirement aims to create a shared retirement space in Yilan using local solutions. While providing family pensions, community pensions and institutional pensions, Huddling for Retirement can be used as an experiment in communal retirement living, with its main advantage being the safety and freedom the space can provide for its residents.
The space concept is divided into three parts: First, the Yilan community for the elderly is merged with the foundation. Social activities can be organised through the foundation so that retirees can improve their interpersonal relationships through horticultural and agricultural activities. Besides growing crops for personal consumption, the crops can also be offered to locals or food banks, which would help improve the elderly’s self- identity and sense of worth. Second, the Yilan House is built with natural and easily accessible local building materials such as hollow bricks, wood, and glass to achieve good ventilation, lighting, and vantage points within the space, providing the residents with comfortable indoor and semi-outdoor spaces.
