Halo
Between Here & There
Counselling the emotional effects of Alzheimer’s for both diagnosed and loved ones is often the only relief obtainable. However, generic information aimed at caregivers is often text-heavy, features impersonal stock imagery and lacks relatable emotive stories. There is scope for a more personal, honest resource for caregivers who need support and encouragement in the face of an unpredictable, devastating disease.
Between Here & There has been designed for those in the early stages of their caregiving journey but is also sympathetic to those further down the track as Alzheimer’s progresses at a varying pace between individuals. The metaphor of the moon – expressed mostly in terms of its ever-changing appearance – provides an underlying visual narrative across the books. The phases of the moon, in which slivers of its surface are lit or receding into darkness, express the experience of watching a loved one come in and out of states of lucidness.
The first book, Between Here & There, is a collection of personal caregiving stories that provide insights into the future of a caregiving journey, as well as self-care tips and advice for caregivers. The second book, Between Now & Then, is an interactive tool for the caregiver to write the life story of their loved one. This act gives purpose and comfort to both caregivers and individuals with Alzheimer’s – while they may be losing their memories, they will not be forgotten. Both books work in compendium: one providing caregivers with relatability and advice, while the other providing engagement and a means of reaching out in the process.
