Bacteria City - Mutated House

Extensions of buildings by means of secondary constructions are common to urban living space in Taiwan. Although extensions of buildings may be viewed as ugly in the city, this design presents a new point of view towards 'disorder' in secondary construction. The advantage of secondary constructions is that they may guard against fragmented mimicking and following of a generic urban image of a modern city, and instead, allow a place to develop its unique urban performance. Architectural design should not serve only the wealthy. It should provide a good quality of life for the ordinary people as well. This design chose an old country house as the site for reconstruction. The buildings located in the Annan District of Tainan City are in poor condition. Besides being old, the houses have become problematic as a space for living. This project, with an economical design process, presents a reconstruction approach to the old buildings. The project is a development of four design models—all aimed at reorganising the secondary constructions of extensions buildings with concepts of organisation, planting, climbing, and linking. By using construction materials that are economical and easily accessible, it creates a new way to see secondary constructions. Red Dot Award: Design Concept | Concept | Habitat
