Red Dot: Grand Prix 2019 – Award for typographic artwork
Companies and agencies that are awarded with the Red Dot: Grand Prix have presented an outstanding design achievement in the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, which is characterised by exceptional creativity and design quality. Last year, the company “Quinsay“ succeeded in inspiring the jurors for its typographic artwork “Time Book“. The work designed by Tong Yi received the highest award in the “Communication Design“ section. The typeface “Quinsay Parto-Y (Beta)“, which is inspired by early letterpress, is found on three different bookends. These are shaped like books, but differ in colour and printing. On their backs, they bear the marking “MMXIX“, which is the Roman number for 2019. The name of the work was created because of the different publication dates of books.
Elegant bookends with history
The collection of bookends is divided into “The Pink“, “The Font“ and “The Ice“. The names are based on the colours and the imprints of the works of art: the hand-polished, transparent crystal glass with special ink contains the calendar of 2019 – the year of the pig in the Chinese calendar. The crystal glass is pink accordingly. “The Ice“ is coloured blue and bears the beginning of the story “A Hundred Years of Solitude“ by Gabriel García Márquez. The yellow bookend “The Font“ presents all 26 letters of the alphabet with numbers and punctuation marks.
The jury’s reasons
After a detailed examination and evaluation of the work, the jury came to the following statement for the award: “This typographic work catches the eye with its impressive presentation of three heavy blocks made of transparent crystal glass. The idea of publishing a new typeface as haptic lettering on three bookends shaped like a book is congenially complemented by the professional quality of the font itself. Heights, kerning and spacing have been harmoniously balanced which makes the typeface ideally suited for modern, flexible use.“
